Online and telephone counselling

Online and telephone counselling has been the norm for many people over the last couple of years, although it has been ongoing for some time before Covid. Our session would be 50 minutes duration.

Working online can be useful if you are a further distance away. You can work around your daily schedule easier with no travelling time and of course it can be in the comfort of your own home. Some people find it easier to express their feelings if they aren’t in the same room as the counsellor.

Of course, consideration needs to be given to the technology you are using and your internet connection. Before our sessions we would discuss what we would do if there was a breakdown in technology. Privacy is another consideration. For some people being at home is safe and they will not be interrupted. For others, interruptions are highly feasible and therefore, they would rather visit the counsellor in a safe counselling space where they will not be overheard.

Using the telephone for sessions is an alternative to face to face counselling sessions. I have found telephone counselling to work well in respect that the tone of voice and pace of speech can be used without the visual distraction. In other words, I can use other senses to really pick up on what you are saying. The same considerations apply to telephone counselling as online counselling around technology and confidentiality.
